Publisher’s Blurb

Ben Ohmart, my Publisher, has issued the following blurb:

“Flying Saucers From Beyond the Earth:  A UFO Researcher’s Odyssey is Gordon Lore’s 15-year odyssey through the 1960s and 1970s, the most formative research and investigation years of this constantly ongoing phenomenon. It is highlighted by his work with Major Donald E. Keyhoe, known as “Mr. UFO” because he wrote the first book and article on the subject in 1950, Richard H. Hall, and Dr. James E. McDonald, one of the premier UFO scientists during the 1960s whose tragic death in 1971 left an enduring gap in the early history of UFO research and investigation.

This new book gives the reader both personal and scientific insights into many perplexing flying saucer sightings and the author’s investigation and research highlighting their importance. The author has also worked with such respected UFO researchers and scientists as Dr. Jacques Vallee, Dr. J. Allen Hynek, Barry Greenwood, Jan Aldrich, Raymond Fowler, Paul Cerny and many others.

The book also highlights the author’s own sightings and personal investigations of prominent UFO sightings in several states and his leading the NICAP subcommittee work of a number of prominent investigators. He can also be seen sitting with Major Donald E. Keyhoe and Richard Hall at a conference table at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., in 1968 in a segment of NASA’s Unexplained Files—Secret Aliens TV show.”

ADVANCE PRAISES

“I was fascinated by Gordon Lore’s account of UFO history and NICAP’s ceaseless struggle to uncover and reveal the truth… If a book dedicated to evidence-based research can be thrilling, Flying Saucers From Beyond the Earth is it.”

--David J. Hogan, author of UFO FAQ:  All That’s Left to Know About Roswell, Aliens, Whirling Discs, and Flying Saucers.

“Gordon Lore provides us with a marvelous look at the Golden Era of flying saucers and UFOs, giving us an uncommon look at the past from the perspective of one who actually lived it as an official of NICAP in Washington, D.C…. It is pure nostalgia for those curious about the controversy over life in space.”

--Barry J. Greenwood, co-author of Clear Intent:  The Government Coverup of the UFO Experience.

-- D.H. Mintz, screenwriter of a film based the life of Major Donald E. Keyhoe.

A Thumbs-Up From Dr. Jacques Vallee

Dr. Jacques Vallee (right) walks with his late friend and mentor,

Dr. J. Allen Hynek. (Photo provided courtesy of Vallee.)

UFO investigators and researchers need no introduction to Dr. Jacques Vallee. His hundreds of books and scientifically-oriented articles on the subject have made him one of the very top figures in the UFO universe for the past 50-plus years. In 1969, I had the honor to spend a full day with him and his mentor, the late Dr. J. Allen Hynek, at their office at Northwestern University in Chicago. At his request. I sent an autographed copy of my book to Jacques, who kindly responded:

“I like the book a lot. You’ve ‘been there’ and you are in a position to speak about it in the first person. I congratulate you on taking the time and having the courage to pull this great testimony together.”

Thank you, Jacques. Your kind thoughts are much appreciated.

An update:  I have kept Jacques Vallee updated on both the progress of my book and the book I am co-authoring with Erica Lukes. I recently asked Jacques if he would be interested in being a guest on Erica’s popular UFO Classified radio talk show. His response, dated July 21, 2019, follows:  “I did listen to a couple of recent shows hosted by Erica and found them very interesting. She obviously has done serious homework in this confusing area, and she brings a much-needed clarity to the debate. As you may know, I believe the best way I can make a contribution is through research, so I am trying to focus on areas where I have relevant data… I believe I have done that with the recent publication of Volume 4 of Forbidden Science, which is filled with archival material. So I don’t plan to do new interviews in the near future. Like you, I fondly remember the early days of research and our visits with Dr. Hynek.”

The BookPleasures Review

Following are excerpts from a review of Flying Saucers From Beyond the Earth:  A UFO Researcher’s Odyssey by Dr. Wesley Britton of BookPleasures.com:

“Lore’s approach is both objective and personal. Objective in that he rarely editorializes on the credibility of UFO spotters… Credibility for many such occurrences is underlined when numerous witnesses reported what they saw at the same time and same place. Lore…  lets the facts speak for themselves.

The odyssey is personal in that Lore was on the inside of UFO explorations for several decades and worked with the most eminent researchers in the field I … rather suspect Flying Saucers From Beyond the Earth may well be Lore’s culmination of all his UFO work, pulled together in a grand finale…

Before reading this book, I was willing to accept the possibility that alien visitors had come to our earth. I’m now convinced they have…”

Those Times, They Were Electric:

A UFO Chronicles Essay by Robert Barrow

(Following are excerpts from an article by veteran UFO investigator and researcher Robert Barrow as posted on The UFO Chronicles website at www.theufochronicles.com. The article can also be found at http://robert-barrow.blogspot.com/2018/09/those-times-they-were-electric.html):

“For 15 years during the turbulent 1960s and 1970s, Gordon Lore waded hip-deep through the UFO controversy… I was an inveterate NICAP member before and during Gordon Lore’s years with the organization… I continued to follow and occasionally contributed in a small way to his work later on…

[Lore’s book is] of such important historical significance… that it must be required reading for anybody seriously interested in the historical and social progression of the UFO phenomenon…

I would recommend Gordon Lore’s book under any circumstances because he was a member of the inner sanctum of private UFO research in the 1960s-1970s era, golden all the more due to his link with NICAP.

Knowing what I remember of his work and concern for documentation, and his relationship with UFO notables such as the late Dr. James E. McDonald and Major Donald E. Keyhoe, I hold every confidence that Lore will hold readers spellbound with revelations from the past…”

Praise From Ray Fowler

One of the joys of having my book published was getting back in touch with the many individuals I used to work with during my stint with NICAP. These include Raymond (“Ray”) Fowler, whose NICAP subcommittee team did a yeoman’s job investigating a case that he later wrote two excellent books about. (See the front cover of his first book below).

Ray had this to say about my book:  “Just finished your great book. It certainly brought back memories of my stint with NICAP and the plethora of UFO sightings we investigated during those times. Its contents are a tribute to your hard work within the NICAP organization.”

Many thanks, Ray!

The Sunday Signal Interview

Jim Holt is a Staff Writer with my local newspaper, the Santa Clarita Valley Sunday Signal. His article entitled “SCV Author Gordon Lore:  A half-century documenting UFO sightings” appeared in the November 11, 2018, edition. Following are some excerpts:

“Finding author Gordon Lore living, working and writing in the Santa Clarita Valley proved to be a treasure and a thrill… Thrilling, for a journalist, was to meet one of the pioneers of UFO research… [His latest book… is the journey of a lifelong commitment, researching the reports of people who encountered something they could not explain, diligently checking facts and pulling on the often tenuous thread of claims that lead to places few writers want to confront…

“Having picked up the mantle for Major Keyhoe more than a half century ago, Gordon Lore has demonstrated convincingly with this book that he carries that mantle high today…”

Thank you, Jim, for your kind words.

The FILMFAX Review of Flying Saucers

From Beyond the Earth

Mike Stein, the Editor/Publisher of FILMFAX plus, The Magazine of Unusual Film, Television, Retro Pop Culture, had this to say about my book in the Summer 2019 edition of FILMFAX:

“When a book about UFO sightings is written in the first person by someone who was alive at the time of those events, and who investigated them for [the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP)], its credibility becomes undeniable. Flying Saucers From Beyond the Earth:  A UFO Researcher’s Odyssey by Gordon Lore gives its readers a genuine feeling of having been there.

“After a short instruction describing some of his earliest personal UFO sightings, Lore segues directly to his recruitment by the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) in 1965, where he worked for the next five years with Major Donald Keyhoe and mentor Richard Hall.

“Actual UFO encounters, told in a ‘you-are-there’ narrative style, begin with “Incidents at Loch Raven Reservoir” in 1958 and extend into 2017 with “UFOS Cavort Over Pittsburgh” (370 pages later). Along the way, sidebar chapters regale the reader with a look into details of the author’s personal “odyssey” mentioned in the book’s subtitle. Revealed is his discovery of two letters sent to Major Keyhoe from the celebrated psychologist Carl Jung (a former student of Sigmund Freud) who had written his own book, Flying Saucers:  A Modern Myth of Things Seen in the Sky. Also documented are Lore’s many appearances on radio, television, and as a lecturer, highlighted by his entertaining anecdotes of all the celebrities he met along the way, many of whom had their own UFO stories to tell.

“And how could any UFO book be worth its cosmic salt without some visual evidence of its apocryphal subject matter? Twenty-four pages of clearly reproduced photographs, many of them of actual UFO sightings, as well as the individuals involved in the investigations, are included.

“The real-world ramifications of UFO studies are also cataloged. J. Edgar Hoover’s personal obsession with the Roswell incident; the 1966 Congressional UFO hearings at which Carl Sagan testified; the invaluable research of J. Allen Hynek, who became world famous after Steven Spielberg’s [film] Close Encounters of the Third Kind, after one of Hynek’s codifications, [was released] and more.

“The list of UFO pop culture references could go on and on, and it does in Gordon Lore’s definitive handbook. This is a fun read for both the casually curious and the serious-minded student of UFOs.”

Thank you very much, Mike, for your glowing review!

U.S. Senators Receive Another Classified UFO Briefing

USS Nimitz

During November, “three more US. Senators received a classified Pentagon briefing… about a series of reported encounters by the Navy with unidentified aircraft,” a result of “a growing number of requests from members of key oversight committees.” One of these requests came from Senator Mark Warner (D-VA.), the Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.

“If naval pilots are running into unexplained interference in the air, that’s a safety concern Senator Warner believes we need to get to the bottom of,” said the senator’s spokesperson, Rachel Cohen.

Some U.S. military and government officials have expressed concern about the reports of UFO sightings over military installations and naval vessels such as the aircraft carrier, the USS Nimitz, and the USS Roosevelt sailing in the Atlantic Ocean in 2015 and 2016. Also, “the growing congressional interest is credited for playing a major role in the service’s recent decision to update the procedures for reporting such unexplained sightings…”

reporting such unexplained sightings…”

“Navy officials did indeed meet with congressional members and staffers on Wednesday [November 20, 2019] to provide a classified brief to understand and identify these threats to the safety and security of our aviators,” according to spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Daniel Day. The commander also said that “follow-up discussions with other interested staffers” was scheduled for the next day.

“Navy officials will continue to keep interested congressional members and staff informed,” Day added. “Given the classified nature of these discussions, we will not comment on the specific information provided in these Hill briefings.”

Thanks to Ananda Sirisena and the NICAP-Research Group for this news.

MUFON Releases “Question of the Century” UFO Letter to Congress

Congressman Mark Walker.

The Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) has released the following sample letter that its members can send to their state and other congresspersons on what it calls “the question of the century”:

“Honorable Congressman:

“I am writing this letter in support of Congressman [Bradley Mark] Walker, of North Carolina and his request for the Secretary of the Navy, Richard Spencer. In this letter, he requested answers concerning the UAP [Unidentified Aerial Phenomena] sightings by Navy pilots and other sightings around the world. Senator Warner of Virginia has also requested answers to these unexplained phenomena.

“I further agree with Congressman Walker when he stated that he was encouraged by the recent decision of the Navy to draft guidelines for reporting UAP’s and agree with him that the responses are vital to our national security and beneficial to scientific research. But although his letter was sent on July 16, 2019, there has been no official response.

“What Are UAP’s?”

“The public is eager and ready to have answers to the question of the century:  ‘What are UAP’s?’

“Based on the evidence that the pilots have given and recorded, we have a better sense of how fast they were going. In an article in history.com, it stated that “Radar operators on the USS Princeton, part of the Nimitz carrier group, tracked the object accelerating from a standing position to traveling 60 miles in a minute—an astonishing 3,600 miles an hour! According to manufacturer Boeing, the F/A 18 Super Hornet fighter jet typically currently reaches a maximum speed of Mach 1.6, or about 1,200 miles an hour.”

“An independent group analyzed the data and interviews of officers Lt. Col. Kurtz, Captain [of the] Marine squadron, and Senior Chief Day as well as Garry Forrest, who worked in fire control… coordination for weapons and radar systems and the conclusion was that the objects dropped from 80,000 feet to 20,000 feet in .78 seconds. We do not have the technology to come close to that.

Tic-Tac Vessels

“The reports that are available state that neither the United States nor any other country that we know of has this technology available to operate objects in this manner. Nor can a human being sustain the accelerations and maneuvers that were witnessed.

“According to Commander David Fravor, ‘tic-tac’ vessels had been in the area for over two weeks. Based on his testimony, the UAP were approximately the size of a 737 jet with no windows, wings or exhaust, In his own words:  “If they would be hostile, we would be in trouble” and he added that the vessels he witnessed were “something not from this world.” Although we cannot conclude how[we] would or could react, these encounters suggest that the UAP were intelligent and not hostile.

“Further sightings have occurred of similar crafts all over the world and although China has invested in advanced technologies and satellites as well as Russia, if these encounters would have been from  them or another earthly country, then it would have been an invasion of our air space.

“The Burden of Proof”

“On September 8th, 2019, Dr. Michael Kaku said at the UFO Conference in Barcelona, Spain:  ‘The burden of proof was on the believers. Now things have shifted. The burden of proof is on the government, that these were not intelligent beings from outer space.” I wonder if this is true.

“On Tuesday, September 17, 2019, I read several news articles that stated that the US. Navy had acknowledged that the three videos that were released in 2014 and 2015 and reported by the New York Times are of real unidentified objects of UAP/UFOs. So, what are they?  The world is ready to know.

“I have been a long-time constituent and supporter of your district [and] I would like for you to take the initiative of requesting clear answers. Addressing this new paradigm in a positive and open way, both in the media and through official channels, would be best for all.

“What Are These UAP’s?”

“In summary, I would like to know:  ‘what are these UAP’s?’ If they are from another country, which country are they from, and what are they doing in our training area? Furthermore, how are we preparing for the real possibility that they are not from this earth?

“Lastly, I would lie to express any concern that we not automatically act in a hostile matter toward he UAP’s. They have not been hostile to us, although they have demonstrated that they have superior technology, we may be able t gain knowledge to advance our energy, healthcare, climate and other areas.

         “Awaiting your response: __________.”

UFO Sightings by Barry Greenwood

Barry Greenwood is a close friend and UFO colleague of Erica Lukes and myself. For many years, he has been a tireless researcher and documentarian of all things UFO. Barry has perhaps the largest single collection of UFO sighting reports, newspaper, magazine, radio and TV programs associated with the flying saucer phenomenon than anyone on earth. His main objective is to preserve as much of the authentic history of UFO sightings as possible for future generations of flying saucer researchers and investigators.

Barry is also the co-author with Lawrence Fawcett of Clear Intent:  The Government Coverup of the UFO Experience (Prentice-Hall, 1984) with a Foreword by the late Dr. J. Allen Hynek. Greenwood documented several sightings he had as a young man from his home in Stoneham, Massachusetts. He included them in what he called his “Observation Log.” Following are the first two of those sightings with others to follow in the next couple issues of this newsletter:

Sighting No. 1:  April 19, 1976, around 11:15 p.m.:  “Observed 7th magnitude light traveling a north-south course while viewing Ursula Major through [high-powered] binoculars. [The object] took 15-20 seconds to cross [my] field of vision. Their exact position could not be determined as the object passed near no points of reference, but it was about five-to-ten degrees east of the star in Ursula Majora at its nearest.

“While observing this object, another light, about magnitude 7, approached on a west-southwest east-northeast straight-line course. The two objects intersected each other’s course at exactly the same time and continued on without deviation.

“Object 2 appeared to travel slightly faster, taking no more than 15 seconds to cross [the] binocular field. I could not follow both lights, so I continued to follow object one until it faded from view a little south of zenith. The lights seemed to be colored white with no other lights visible.”

Sighting No. 2:  April 20, 1976, 9:55-10 p.m.:  “Noticed bight star in the center of Bootes that should not be there. The object was slowly moving northward. It crossed the field of vision of my eight-inch telescope with a 40 mm eyepiece in about 5 seconds.

“The object was nearly as bright as Arcturus when first seen. It passed very close on the west side of B. Bootis, then moved into Draco and faded rapidly.

“The object appeared through my telescope as a round, bluish-white light. I took an estimated 30-second time exposure with a 35 m.m. SLR, Fl.7 camera while the light approached Draco.”
